What did the flower say to the other flower?
We all know that flora can speak, and if you did not know this - now you know!
Even one of my all-time favourite scary movie-makers M Night Shyamalamahaan has shown this in The Happening (love, love, love).
Their language is far too complex for us Homo Sapiens to understand, but that has not stopped us from creating a language for them but for us to use ourselves. This is called Floriography - the art of communicating through different types of flowers.
Giving flowers to someone on different occasions most of us has done at some point in our lives. To celebrate, to apologize... to say goodbye... But I had never thought about Floriography when I have purchased or picked my bouquets... I had only gone by their looks.
What if the flowers I have given away has communicated something other than what I had in mind? Maybe I have been rude without knowing it, or declared an emotion I definitely did not mean to convey? There are flowers out there that suit certain situations or occasions more than others - white lilies for funerals and a red rose for your love, for example... and, as I am going to go deeper into here - flowers for your wedding.
When speaking the language of flowers you do this based on the type of flower, the colour of the flower, or both. So, if you wish to tell someone how you feel, but are too shy - this is one way to go.
But not all flowers have a positive meaning, so there are flora out there you should avoid if you want to confess your heartwarming emotions. But if you are in the thoughts of telling someone off, here are some examples for a subtle "FUCK YOU!":
Buttercups
- Ingratitude
- Childish behaviour
- Unfaithfulness
Yellow Carnations
- Disdain
- Rejection
Orange Lilies
- Hatred
- Pride
- Contempt
Petunia
- Deep resentment
- Anger
Black Rose
- Death and mourning
- Revenge
- Hatred
- End of a career or a relationship
These are definitely not the emotions I want to show or have on our wedding day. The flower and its meanings I have chosen to have in my bouquet is:
White Peony
- Prosperity,
- Good fortune
- Happiness
- Honour
- Compassion
- Encourages a happy marriage.
Edelweiss
- Deep love
- Devotion.
Nigella - "love-in-a-mist", or "devil in the bush"
- Openness to love
- Kiss me
- Harmony and love
- The bonds that bind people together
- Reverence and humility
- Purity and innocence
- Sympathy for a bereavement
- Honesty
- Perfection.
- Love
- Kindness
- Femininity
